St. Maarten has the characteristics of a dry island, with limited vegetation but don’t let that stop you from seeing the beauty the island has to show. The east coast is often known for its strong winds that blast against the uplands, causing clouds to form. This condenses the heat and converts it into rain showers, resulting in lush green vegetation along the rocky hills of St. Maarten.
The western tip of the island also known as ‘Terres Basses’ is a limestone plateau, where there is less rainfall, with scrub and cacti for vegetation.
As a result, this gives the island it’s natural hilly formation that captivates the eye of the visitors. The island does have loose soil so when it does rain it is advised to be careful when driving up hills or on the side. As mud, rocks, or any form of debris could slide or rush down the sides and end up on the road. St. Maarten’s climate promises an endless summer because of the consistent temperature range that encourages the growth of lush flora and roaring fauna.
St. Maarten’s Climate All Year Round
One saying perfectly describes St. Maarten’s climate, “It’s always sunny in St. Maarten.” Because it literally is! In St. Maarten, summer lasts all year and has a tropical climate, which means it is hot and humid, with temperatures that change very slightly throughout the year thanks to the trade winds. Although it will occasionally have a short burst of rain, these bursts of rain are called “squalls”. These bursts of rain happen throughout the years or even days. This is what causes the humidity on the island.
The average yearly temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which often goes up to a maximum of 89 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, the temperature rarely drops below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The best part is you don’t have to buy anything for winter because it never gets cold on the island.
What is the Ideal Time to Visit St. Maarten?
When talking about St. Maarten’s climate, there are ideally only two seasons. The dry season lasts from December to April and is the best time to visit for tourists. Tourists flock to the area during this time to take advantage of the pleasant weather and warm temperatures. During this time, the sun constantly shines bright with almost no rain.
Daylight hours are longer during the wet season, which runs from May to November. The sun rises between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. and sets by 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. all year. This helps to allow visitors to get away from the harsh cold of winter in most parts of the world.
However, it is much cheaper to come and visit the island during its hurricane season. But this does come with some disadvantages. It’s always advised to check hurricane trackers and see what the weather is looking like on the island during the season. If you are to buy tickets to the island and a hurricane does make its way here it could cause calculations or if you are a visitor on the island at the time you could get stuck here. But the island rarely does have hurricanes. Yet we are still recovering from Irma by growing and developing the island to be better than ever. You could be part of helping the island develop into becoming better.
