Vacationing in St. Maarten for the next few months? Then, it’s better to start looking for vacation rental properties in St. Maarten. Staying in a hotel can become too pricey, plus you won’t be able to enjoy the experience to the fullest without having your own private space.

Shopping for vacation rental properties can be exhausting, especially if you’re on vacation. However, by dodging some red flags, you can easily find a great vacation rental property in no time. Here are some red flags you need to steer clear of while shopping for rental properties.

1. Vacation Rental Listings in St. Maarten without Pictures

Nowadays, everyone has a smartphone camera, so clicking a few pictures won’t be a hassle. Whether you’re searching for properties to rent or purchase, you must check out online property listings.

Countless credible sites offer rental property listings in St. Maarten. You could also check out property listings on your real estate agent’s website. However, beware of properties without any pictures. If listing details are vague or there are no pictures, something’s amiss. When owners avoid pictures, it’s usually because they’re hiding something. The best thing to do would be to contact the seller and ask for pictures of the property or you could try and schedule a meeting. Maybe you could go see the property for yourself and decide whether it is good or not.

2. Properties with Foundational issues

While searching for a rental property, you might come across one you like, but there is something you should check, especially if the property is on a hill. Here in St. Maarten our soil is very loose, and mudslides are common, and this could affect properties. You want to make sure that the property you are looking at is built with a good foundation because in the cause of a natural disaster there could be some loosening of the ground. This could cause the property to literally fall or come off its foundation. So, always ask about the property’s foundation to ensure your safety and the safety of others around you.

3. Bad smells in properties

While looking at properties in person make sure that there are no weird smells or that there is an awful smell. This could mean a multitude of different things and none of them are a sign of anything good. Try and ask the seller what that smell might be or where it is coming from because the last thing you want is to have an infestation of some kind. Sometimes if you get lucky these smells could be fixed when maybe the simple changes of furniture or the changing of maybe flooring. It is always best to ask your agent what they think about the smell and fi it is something to worry about.

4. Evidence of bugs

The last thing you want to happen is that you buy a property and there is a bug infestation somewhere in the house. Here in St. Maarten, there are a ton of creepy crawlies, and you don’t want to have any of them in your property, that’s for sure. This is because it will cost a lot of money to get rid of the infestation and it could cause damage to the property. Additionally, you won’t be able to know how bad the infestation is or where it might be on the property. Regardless it is one big headache that you do want to miss out on. The best thing to do is if you are under the impression that the property might have an infestation have an exterminator come and examine the property before you purchase. You could also ask your agent what their advice might be and how they would go about the issue.

5. Amateur Workmanship

The one thing you want to avoid that can be seen by some people and especially agents is amateur workmanship. Make sure that the property you buy isn’t built badly or that the interior looks fine. Amateur workmanship could lead to bad wiring and could be the lead-up or the cause of everything mentioned previously on the list. You could always ask the seller who built the house or the construction company they worked with and see what they have built before. You could see reviews about them, and issues people have had, and this could help get your expectations ready. However, as mentioned before you could always ask your agent what they think about the workmanship of the property.
